INFORMATION:

The SAN ANTONIO LUTHERAN CHORALE (SALC) is comprised of 37 voices from nine Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregations in  the San Antonio and  surrounding  areas, including  Concordia, Cross  (New Braunfels),  Hosanna (Kerrville),  King of Kings,  Mt. Calvary, Redeemer,  Shepherd of the Hills,  Mt. Olive and Grace (Seguin).  Members of the Chorale give generously of their time to participate both in SALC and in their own church music ministries.

SALC was founded in the summer of 1997. Rehearsals began in January of 1998. There are two seasons each year during  which  the  Chorale  performs.  The spring season  begins with r ehearsals in  January, and a  concert in the May/June  time-frame.  The fall season typically begins in  August to get ready for a  Christmas concert in early December.  We only rehearse about  twice a month;   typically  every other Sunday  from  6:00-8:00 PM  at  Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Mt. Calvary Dr. in San Antonio.

New members are welcomed  during the first two  rehearsals of each season.  We can send information to anyone interested in becoming a member.  Any queries into the SALC can be directed to Lorna May at 210-492-1260.

During the Spring 2000 season we began our Prison Ministry with a trip to the John B. Connally Unit in Kenedy, Texas on May 6.   We   look forward to continuing this type of ministry the Good Lord has opened for us, as it included stops at two nursing/terminal care facilities in Kenedy as well.

The SALC is a non-profit organization supported solely by membership dues and the financial support of its patrons.  If interested in joining our mailing list to receive flyers/information for each of our chorale presentations, please leave your name and address on our message board.

SALC is privileged to serve under the direction of GAYLE MORRIS.  She is the founding director of the SAN ANTONIO LUTHERAN CHORALE and has been active in church music as an organist and choir director for over 30 years. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance and a Master of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has served as organist and/or choir director for various Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod events, including the 1984 Texas District Lutheran Women's Missionary League Annual Convention, the 1995 Lutheran Laymen's League Lutheran Hour Rally, and three tri-circuit services and choral concerts. She currently serves as music director and organist at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, San Antonio, Texas, directing the adult choir, the children's choir, and two chimes choirs.

David Cherwien, Organist & Clinician sponsored by the San Antonio Lutheran Chorale
Workshop designed for church musicians, pastors, choir members and lay members interested in hymnody

David Cherwien has served parishes as full-time musician for over 20 years in Minneapolis, Chicago, Seattle and Berlin.  During academic year 2000-2001 he will be Organist/Cantor of Christ Chapel and Visiting Instructor of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter.  In all of these contexts he composes or improvises much of the music in the worship services.  He is a composer of organ music, especially that based on hymn tunes, and other liturgical music for choir and organ.  He is author of the book Let the People Sing, a practical guide for those who lead the congregation in song.

"As a renowned church organist, composer and improviser, David Cherwien brings creativity to hymns of various traditions and styles.  He has won national acclaim as a leader of congregational song with hymn festivals that are always inspiring.  With innovative merging of organ, piano, instruments and voices, his music enfolds the participants and transports them to an encounter with the sublime.  Through this expression of faith, Mr. Cherwien bears witness that music is a glorious gift of God."

RECRUITMENT LETTER
The San Antonio Lutheran Chorale is now accepting members for the fall, 2000, season.  We invite singers of all voice parts to join us for a season that this year, because of special events, will carry us through January, 2001.
Planned for the fall is a Christmas concert on December 3.  Because we were so blessed by our visit in May to the John B. Conally Prison Unit in Kenedy, we hope to be able to squeeze in a time in December to take our Christmas concert there as well.
The highlight of the season is a workshop and hymn festival January 20-21, 2001, featuring David Cherwien, nationally acclaimed composer, organist, and clinician and a past president of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.  Church musicians, pastors, choir members and lay members from all over the state will be invited to attend.  In addition, the San Antonio Lutheran Chorale has commissioned Mr. Cherwien to compose an anthem for us, which will premiere at the hymn festival.  Mr. Cherwien is a joy to work with, and I know that, as a member of the Chorale, you will be rewarded by the experience.

Membership dues are $20 and help defray the cost of music.  A membership form is included for your convenience.  New members will be accepted at our first two rehearsals only, September 10 and 24.  We meet from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Mt. Calvary Dr., in San Antonio.  I invite you to attend the first rehearsal without any obligation to join. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.  May God bless your worship.
